Breast Augmentation Incision Techniques
Dr. Marcus H. Crawford has many options available when placing breast implants. This helps ensure that each patient from the Marietta and Atlanta, GA area undergoes a fully customized breast augmentation surgery that best meet their needs.
The location of the incision will typically determine two important aspects of breast augmentation surgery:
- Where the surgical scars will be located and whether or not they will be visible
- If the patient can have silicone or saline breast implants placed
The final results of breast augmentation surgery can vary depending on the incision technique, so it’s important for us to consider the incision method that’s most ideal for you.
The Inframammary Incision Method
The inframammary incision is made on the underside of the breast along the natural crease where the bottom of the breast meets the chest. Saline and silicone breast implants can be placed using this incision method.
This incision allows plastic surgeons to have the most amount of control when positioning and moving a breast implant. While the scar is located on the underside of the breast, all efforts are made to keep the incision as small as possible. The scar itself will fade with time and be hard to notice.
The Periareolar Incision Method
The periareolar incision is made around the areola, which is the circular portion of skin around the nipple. Both silicone and saline breast implants can be placed through this areola incision.
Even though this incision is located around the areola, the scar blends in nicely with the natural edge of the areola, making it less noticeable and in some cases seamless. The scar will become even less noticeable as it continues to fade.
The Transaxillary Incision Method
The transaxillary incision is made in a patient’s armpit. Through this incision, an implant can be placed and directed into the chest. Given the location of the incision, only saline breast implants can be placed using this technique.
The transaxiallry breast surgery method is a hidden incision technique, which means that there are no post-surgical scars on or near the breasts. This makes this method an attractive option for many patients.
The Transumbilical Incision Method
The transumbilical incision is made in a patient’s belly button. Through this navel incision, a breast implant can be maneuvered and positioned. Given the location of the incision, only saline breast implants can be placed with this technique.
Another hidden incision method, the transumbilical technique is arguably the ideal way of completely hiding post-surgical scars. Practically no one will notice a surgical scar in your belly button, allowing you the most freedom when wearing tops, bathing suits, and undergarments.
Developing a Treatment Plan That’s Right for Each Patient
In addition to all of the incision methods above, it’s important to discuss implant size, placement of the implants, and other factors that can affect final outcomes of surgery. That’s why it’s so important to visit our practice for a breast augmentation consultation. We can answer all of your questions and address your concerns as they arise.
