Preventing Weight Gain Following a Liposuction Procedure

January 30, 2015

Many patients who undergo liposuction surgery are already committed to a wellness lifestyle that includes healthy eating and exercise habits. They already have a regular exercise routine and eat a sensible, well-balanced diet. These patients turn to liposuction as a means to remove stubborn areas of fat that have not been diminished by exercise and diet. In essence, they are looking to put the finishing touches on their hard work to lose weight and be able to proudly show off the results of their efforts to family and friends.

Nevertheless, patients should not think that all of their weight loss efforts need to come to an end following a liposuction procedure. Rather, they must still work to maintain their weight. Unless patients keep up with their weight loss efforts, they may eventually once again develop stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Liposuction Procedure

In a liposuction procedure, a series of small incisions are made in the area of the body in which fat will be removed. Then, a thin metal tube called a cannula is inserted through the incisions and the fat is gently vacuumed out of the body. The liposuction technique that we perform may involve the use of ultrasonic waves or laser energy to break up the fat, thus making it easier to remove. The procedure itself can be done under either regional anesthesia or local anesthesia. Prior to liposuction, an injection of a mixture of local anesthetic and epinephrine is administered to the treatment area. This causes the fat to swell, which can also make it easier to remove. The liposuction procedure can be performed alone or in conjunction with a body contouring procedure, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thigh lift.

Maintaining Weight Loss

Keeping up a regular exercise routine and eating a sensible diet are the two key ways to maintain weight loss following a liposuction procedure. Most patients are able to resume light exercise, such as yoga or walking, within one to two weeks following liposuction. Patients can generally return to their regular pre-surgical exercise routine within three to four weeks after the procedure.

A diet that is high in proteins, fruits, and vegetables is essential for keeping off the weight. It is important for liposuction patients to add extra fiber into their diet following a liposuction procedure, as this will help the body heal more quickly from the procedure. Drinking plenty of water will also help regulate the body and help it to heal. A good guideline to follow is to try to drink 64 ounces of water a day. Although other fluids, such as coffee, tea, and juice count toward the 64 ounces, it is ideal that water be account for at least half of that total per day.
