Nonsurgical Nose Jobs with Dermal Fillers

September 21, 2013

A nose job (rhinoplasty) can make a tremendous difference to a person’s appearance. It can correct for overly large, long, or wide noses, those with bumps, or even droopy nasal tips. A proper nose job can put the facial features back into proper proportion, thereby minimizing the focus on just one feature of the face.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Nonsurgical Nose Job?

Although a rhinoplasty is a relatively simple surgical procedure, there are some patients who either cannot or will not opt for surgical correction of the nose. Patients with diabetes, heart problems, bleeding or clotting disorders, or a history of trouble with anesthesia are not good surgical candidates. In other cases, patients may not wish to endure the swelling and bruising following a rhinoplasty, may be concerned about excessive recovery time, or only need a small amount of work done on their nose. Fortunately, dermal fillers serve as a good alternative for those patients who do not opt for a cosmetic surgical procedure to correct for nasal issues.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Collagen is a form of protein that essentially holds the human body together. Collagen is what “plumps out” the face. As we age, we lose collagen from various parts of the body, including the face. This can lead to a gaunt, hollowed appearance to the face. Dermal fillers are made of collagen-like materials and serve to add volume to the areas where it is injected.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

A series of injections just under the surface of the skin will add the dermal filler at targeted locations on the nose. The dermal filler plumps up certain areas of the skin, making flaws less noticeable. For example, collagen injections in the area around a prominent bump on the nose will fill out the area around the bump, which may make it less noticeable by contrast.

How Do Dermal Fillers Compare to Surgery?

The major advantage for dermal fillers over surgery is that it is much less invasive, which makes it an ideal choice for those patients for whom surgery is too risky. The actual procedure time is generally only 15 to 30 minutes, compared to surgery, which could take several hours, depending on the extent of correction needed. Risks and side effects from dermal fillers are much less than that of surgery. While there may be some bruising, swelling, or bleeding at the injection sites, most of this is expected to fade within a few days after the procedure. It may take up to two weeks for these to subside for those who have surgery. Patients should also expect to see results within just a few days from a dermal filler procedure, while it may take up to three months for those who have a rhinoplasty procedure.

Dr. Marcus Crawford and Dr. Steven Bailey believe that all patients should be able to put their best face forward with a nose job. There is no reason for patients who do not opt for surgery to forgo having attractive facial features. Nasal dermal fillers can provide just the right solution.
